Inverter air conditioners use complex electronic boards (PCBs) to control compressor speeds and fan parameters. While non-inverter ACs only had a basic starting capacitor and relay, inverter ACs use advanced power electronics. This makes them more efficient but also more vulnerable to voltage fluctuations.
Anatomy of an Inverter Outdoor PCB
An inverter outdoor PCB contains several critical component blocks:
1. **Input Filter & Surge Protectors:** Varistors (MOVs) and fuses designed to absorb high voltage spikes.
2. **Rectifier Bridge:** Converted incoming 230V AC mains into high-voltage DC (approx. 320V DC).
3. **Capacitor Bank:** Heavy-duty electrolytic capacitors (typically 450V, 1000-2200uF) that smooth the rectified DC ripple voltage.
4. **Intelligent Power Module (IPM):** A single integrated circuit containing six High-Speed IGBT switches. The IPM receives low-voltage control signals from the microprocessor and switches the 320V DC to generate a 3-phase variable frequency AC output for the compressor.
Common PCB Failures
* **Surge Blowout:** Occurs during voltage fluctuations. The MOV shorts and blows the main fuse, protecting the rest of the board. This is easily repaired by replacing the fuse and varistor.
* **IPM Failure:** If the outdoor unit fan fails or the heatsink gets clogged with dust, the IPM will overheat and short-circuit. This stops the compressor from starting and may trip your electrical MCB.
* **Optocoupler Degradation:** Optocouplers isolate the low-voltage microprocessor from the high-voltage mains signal. Over time, heat can degrade these chips, causing communication errors like LG CH05 or Daikin U4.
