Choosing the correct AC size (tonnage) is critical for comfort and efficiency. If your AC is too small, it will run continuously without cooling the room properly; if it is too large, it will cycle off too quickly, leaving the air humid and clammy.

Understanding AC Tonnage AC tonnage does not refer to the physical weight of the unit. One Ton of refrigeration is defined as the cooling capacity required to melt one ton (2000 lbs) of ice in 24 hours. In modern terms, **1 Ton of cooling equals 12,000 BTU (British Thermal Units) per hour** or approximately 3,500 Watts of heat removal capacity.

Step-by-Step Tonnage Calculation To calculate the tonnage needed for your room, follow this process: 1. **Calculate Room Volume:** Measure room length, width, and ceiling height in feet. * *Formula:* Length × Width × Height = Volume (cubic feet). 2. **Apply Base Cooling Load:** Divide the volume by 1000 to find the base tonnage requirement. 3. **Add Heat Load Modifiers:** * **Sun Exposure:** Add 10% to the cooling load if the room has windows facing south or west. * **Top Floor/Roof Exposure:** Add 20% to the cooling load if the room is directly below a concrete roof exposed to the sun. * **Occupancy:** Add 400 BTU (0.03 Tons) for each person regularly in the room. * **Lighting and Appliances:** Add 10% if the room has computer setups or significant lighting.
