Understanding AC Gas Charging: R32 Pressures, Safety, and Weight Rules

Refrigerant gas filling is one of the most critical maintenance tasks for split and window air conditioners. With the phase-out of R22, R32 has become the dominant green refrigerant. However, R32 requires specialized safety handling compared to older gases.

Why R32 is Preferred R32 (Difluoromethane) offers significant thermodynamic advantages: * **GWP of 675:** 68% lower than R410A. * **Higher Efficiency:** Requires 10% to 15% less charge volume. * **Single Component:** Unlike R410A (which is a blend), R32 can be topped up directly without recovering the entire charge.

R32 Safety: The Flammability Factor R32 is classified as an **A2L mildly flammable refrigerant**. While it is hard to ignite and does not explode easily under open air, safety rules must be followed: 1. **Never Mix with Air:** Ensure no oxygen is inside the refrigerant lines. The mixture of R32 and oxygen under high pressure can trigger ignition. 2. **Mandatory Vacuuming:** Always run a vacuum pump to achieve under 500 microns before charging gas. 3. **No Open Flame Near Valves:** Ensure no welding torches are lit near charging ports.

R32 Pressure Specifications * **Suction Pressure:** 115 to 140 PSI (varies based on outdoor ambient temperatures between 30°C and 38°C). * **Discharge/High Pressure:** 390 to 460 PSI. * **Standing Pressure (Off):** 250 to 280 PSI.

The Weight Scale charging Rule Inverter systems use electronic expansion valves that open and close in micro-steps. If you overcharge or undercharge by even 50 grams, the system will cycle inefficiently and may trigger error codes like CH38 (LG) or E5 54 (Samsung). Always use a digital weighing scale to charge the exact weight listed on the outdoor unit label.
